Spouses, common law partners and conjugal partners of permanent resident or citizens can be sponsored to immigrate to Canada.

Requirements and Eligibility

  • The sponsor is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, and atleast 18 years old
  • Demonstrate that the marriage is legal in Canada or under the laws of the jurisdiction that it was carried out in
  • In the case of common law partner or conjugal partner, demonstrate that the relationship is for a minimum period of 1 year
  • The sponsor must be willing to sign a sponsorship undertaking agreement with the Canadian Government

People who are permanent residents or Canadian citizens can sponsor their dependent children, children of their spouses/ common law partner or adopter children.

Requirements and Eligibility

  • The sponsor is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, and atleast 18 years old
  • The sponsor must be willing to sign a sponsorship undertaking agreement with the Canadian Government
  • In some cases, meet the minimum financial obligations required by the Canadian government

People who are permanent residents or Canadian citizens can sponsor their parents or grand parents, as long as they can prove the relationship and meet the financial requirements.

  • The sponsor is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, and atleast 18 years old
  • The sponsor must be willing to sign a sponsorship undertaking agreement with the Canadian Government
  • Meet the minimum financial obligations required by the Canadian government

Note: In 2020, the interest to sponsor form for the parent/ grandparent sponsorship opened on October 13, 2020 and closed on November 3, 2020. Sponsors will be randomly chosen to complete their sponsorship application for parents/ grandparents. Invitations will be sent by email. The Government of Canada introduced the Super visa program to facilitate parents and grandparents of permanent residents and Canadian citizens to visit Canada for a longer duration temporarily. The super visa is valid for up to 10 years and allows people to visit Canada for up to 2 years at a time.

Requirements and Eligibility

  • Have a letter of invitation from the relative of the Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Meet financial requirements and show suitable financial capability to support the parent(s)/ grandparent(s) during their stay in Canada
  • Have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company
  • Provide proof of ties to the home country
  • Must be in good health to be medically admissible to Canada

Permanent residents and Canadian may sponsor relatives like brothers, sisters, aunt or uncles in specific situations.

Requirements and Eligibility (for Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild)

A brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild can be sponsored if all following conditions are met:

  • they’re related to you by blood or adoption
  • both their mother and father passed away
  • they’re under 18 years of age
  • they’re single (not married or in a common-law or conjugal relationship)

Requirements and Eligibility (for other relative)

One relative, related by blood or adoption, of any age, may be sponsored if the following conditions are met:

  • The sponsor does not have a living relative who can be sponsored (e.g., spouse/ partner, son, daughter, parent, grandparent, orphaned nephew/ niece/ brother/ sister/ grandchild)
  • The sponsor does not have any relatives (aunt or uncles or any relatives listed above) who is a permanent resident or Canadian citizen

The following requirements must be met in both situations:

  • The sponsor is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, and at least 18 years old
  • The sponsor must be willing to sign a sponsorship undertaking agreement with the Canadian Government
  • Meet the minimum financial obligations required by the Canadian government
