In most cases, a study permit is required for students to take courses or register in a program. A study permit is required for studies that are more than 6 months in length.
Requirements and Eligibility
- Be accepted in a program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) for study
- Demonstrate and prove that they have significant financial support to pay for schooling and living expenses during the period of study
- Provide proof of ties to the home country and show that they will return to the home country upon completion of the program
- Must be in good health to be medically admissible to Canada
A work permit is required if work is an integral part of the program that is being offered by the college or university.
Requirements and Eligibility
- The student must have a valid work permit
- The work experience must be required to complete the program requirements
Note: The work cannot be comprised of more than 50% of the total duration of the intended program of study. This work permit is not applicable to for studies that are English or French as a second language or studies that consist of general interest or preparatory/ prerequisite courses.
PGWP is a pathway for students who have completed a program at a Designated Learning Institution to apply for a work permit. The length of the work permit is dependent on the length of the program of study.
Requirements and Eligibility
- Completed a program at an eligible institution in Canada that is atleast 8 months in duration leading to a diploma, degree or certificate
- Have maintained full time status in Canada during each academic session of the program (except the final academic session)
- Have received a transcript and an official letter from the institution that requirements of the program have been met
- Apply for a PGWP within 180 days of the completion of the program
